Audi Advancing Self Driving Tech for Fuel Efficiency

Audi is going to great lengths to improve the fuel economy of the upcoming 2017 Audi A4 and the automaker managed to slip a few automation features into the vehicle as well. The next A4 will be offered at a competitive price and is set to be jam packed with impressive features that most car buyers would be thrilled to have at that price point.

Predictive Efficiency Assistant

The most major change that Audi is making on the next generation of the A4 is what the automaker calls Predictive Efficiency Assistant. This feature works alongside adaptive cruise control to boost fuel efficiency figures by up to 10 percent. The tech does this by adjusting the speed of the vehicle based on the curves of the road, the grade and the current terrain. By making changes to maximize fuel economy based on the terrain the car can get more efficient fuel economy on its own than it can with a driver handling the gas pedal. This is just one example of how Audi will make changes with self-driving technology and it shows how Audi is working toward a fully-autonomous system as well.

Fuel Economy Improvements

Audi also made adjustments to the vehicle to lower its body weight by a total of 200 lbs. and the automaker improved the aerodynamics of the vehicle to bolster fuel economy even more. While these changes won’t result in dramatic fuel efficiency improvements every little change helps to create a much more efficient vehicle overall.

Traffic Jam Assistant

The 2017 Audi A4 should also come equipped with Traffic Jam Assist, a feature that will allow the car to operate itself when stuck in serious traffic jam conditions. This should improve the efficiency of the vehicle during traffic jams, but more importantly it will make the car incredibly convenient for people who have to commute in major cities that are prone to traffic jams on a regular basis. The vehicle will make the commute more enjoyable and the feature will be a major selling point for people looking for a bit of solace from standard traffic conditions.

The Virtual Cockpit

Audi is also planning on adding the virtual cockpit feature into the 2017 version of the A4. That’s the awesome gauge setup that utilizes a large LCG display instead of the standard gauges. It allows the driver to view navigation information and a range of other useful data points comfortably that would otherwise have to be viewed off to the side.

The next Audi A4 represents a major technical leap forward and it’s an exciting one. It’s bringing together some of Audi’s newest features and showing them off in a package that most entry-level luxury buyers will be able to afford.
