Audi was involved in another hypermiling world record this past week with its A6 TDI Ultradiesel model travelling more than 1,000 miles and through 14 different countries on a single tank of diesel. If that’s not impressive consider the fact that the car has a fuel tank that holds less than 20 gallons. The overall trip took the team over 1,158.9 miles for an effective fuel efficiency rating of about 63 MPG from start to finish.

The team

Rebecca Jackson a racecar driver and TV presenter and Andrew Frankel an auto journalist got together to try and accomplish the seemingly impossible. They travelled for a total of 28 hours of non-stop driving, and did so without any refueling at all.

Beating Out the Estimated Rating

The A6 2.0 TDI Ultradiesel has an estimated fuel efficiency level of 55.8 MPG in US mileage. That’s pretty high on its own, but it wouldn’t have been enough to achieve this trip on its own. The team of drivers had to very carefully choose the route they would travel along to help avoid congested traffic conditions and mountain roads. Due to some unforeseen circumstances along the way they still ended up taking some mountain roads along the way and dropping their mileage lower than they wanted.

When Audi originally came up with the hyper-miling idea to take place in Europe their goal was to travel more than 1,000 miles and go through at least 10 countries. They shattered that goal by traveling through four additi8nal countries and by travelling over 100 extra miles.

Not the First Hypermiling Accomplishment

This 1000+ mile journey isn’t the first achievement that Audi has been involved with. The automaker had a challenge involving the A3 TDI last year that had the vehicle travelling more than 800 miles on a single tank. The latest Audi diesel vehicles are known for good fuel efficiency levels and a long-distance driving range.

The A6 is one of the most fuel efficient diesel models to date, but it currently isn’t available in the United States. If you want to try to do some impressive hypermiling of your own, you’ll have to stick with the A3 TDI. Even though the vehicle is smaller and more lightweight, it isn’t as fuel efficient as the A6 diesel with around 43 MPG compared to 55 MPG. This could change in the future as the A3 is updated, but we’ll have to wait and see if the two cars end up being closer together. It’s a shame that the A6 isn’t sold stateside yet, perhaps in the future.
