The Audi Q5 is equipped with a number of technologies that are dedicated to improve its fuel economy and to lower its emissions.

The electrified powertrain

One of the two available powertrains for the Q5 benefits from a mild electrification. Indeed, the 2.0L turbocharged engine in the Q5 45 models is paired with an electric motor. This makes it possible to reach a higher level of performances without using a larger engine that would increase the fuel consumption. With a combined output of 261 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, the Q5 45 offers the driving dynamics that are expected from Audi, while keeping a fuel consumption that is lower than most of the other vehicles in its category. By boosting the available torque when accelerating of climbing hills, the electric motor reduces the load from the gasoline engine and prevents the transmission from having to downshift to keep up the pace. Incidentally, the transmission also plays a part in the impressive economy of the Q5. The S Tronic dual-clutch transmission is able to make lightning-quick gear changes which benefit the drivetrain’s efficiency and its performances.

The drive mode selection

The Audi Q5 gives multiple drive mode choices to the driver in order to better suit the road conditions or the driver’s preferences. In addition to the sport mode and the comfort mode, the Q5 benefits from an Eco mode which prioritises an improved fuel economy. This mode effects the programming of the engine control system, the transmission and the accelerator pedal. This makes it easier to drive in a more ecofriendly way and to save fuel by making the accelerator less responsive and by commanding the transmission to shift earlier than it would normally do to keep the engine’s speed low. Despite these effects, the full power is always available by pushing the pedal down further, which is useful for merging on the highway or passing a slower vehicle easily.
