If you are not sure how to tell if your Audi’s winter tires are still in good condition, the following tips and advice should help. Our goal here is to give you the different ways that you can check or know if your winter tires are still in good condition. We are also available to help you make that determination if you prefer!

Tread depth

To be safe and effective, winter tires have to have a tread depth of at least 4.8 mm. This is very important because anything less at the beginning of winter means that your tires will likely go below 4 mm of tread depth before the end of the season. And anything below 4 mm is considered dangerous and will certainly impact the stability and capability of your Audi this winter, Quattro all-wheel drive or not.

Measuring the tread depth of your tires is fairly straightforward. You can use a special tool, or you can even use a quarter by placing the nose of the caribou down in the tread. If you can still see the nose, you likely need to replace your winter tires.

Tire age

Even if your winter tires still have some tread left, it is a good idea to have them replaced if this is your third or fourth season, or if you have accumulated between 25,000 and 30,000 km. New winter tires are not just a lot more effective than your current tires probably were three or four years ago, but most winter tires are not designed to last longer than 30,000 km.

Winter tire performance last year

If you felt your car wasn't as stable as it should be at the end of last winter, or you had trouble getting up hills or you felt your Audi slide in turns, you should replace your winter tires regardless of the tread depth.
