2019 Audi A3 vs 2019 BMW 2 Series: More Accessible Luxury

2019 Audi A3 vs 2019 BMW 2 Series: More Accessible Luxury

The world of entry-level luxury sedans is dominated by two models that distinctively stand out, the Audi A3 and the BMW 2 Series. Both provide an impressive combination of performance, refinement, efficiency, safety and connectivity at a price point that makes sense. That said, when it comes to providing value, the 2019 Audi A3 has the BMW 2 Series beat.

Indeed, the 2019 Audi A3 starts at $33,400 right out of the gate while the BMW 2 Series has a starting price set at $38,050. That’s quite a considerable difference that continues when looking at the convertible versions of both cars. Indeed, the new Audi A3 convertible starts at just $44,400 while the BMW 2 Series convertible starts at $48,000 despite having the same size and roughly the same starting equipment list. It should be noted, however, that the Audi A3 gets a standard 7-speed automatic S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox while the 2 Series gets a manual with its standard version. To get an automatic in the entry-level 2 Series, you have to add an additional $1,500. Moreover, the Audi is either FWD or equipped with Quattro all-wheel drive. The 2 Series has a rear-wheel drive setup in its base configuration.

What does this all mean? Well, if you want an automatic BMW 2 Series with all-wheel drive, you will pay $42,250 compared to $38,200 with the Audi A3. The difference is significant and certainly noticeable.

More space in the 2019 Audi A3

The other point that should be noted when comparing the Audi A3 and the BMW 2 Series is that the latter is a two-door coupe while the A3 is a sedan with four doors. Despite being in the same segment and often compared to each other, these two German entry-level models are distinctively different when it comes to overall versatility and interior space. The A3 is a much better fit for young families or couples that have just had a baby with its larger rear seat and easier access.

Powering the 2019 Audi A3 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 228 horsepower compared to 248 horsepower in the entry-level BMW 2 Series. Although the BMW has more power, the Audi has roughly the same acceleration and performance both in a straight line and when passing. In other words, you won’t notice the difference in power between the two vehicles, but you will notice the difference in interior space and in the monthly payment as well.
