Charging at Home

Having the right charger is essential. Follow this guide to ensure you have the right charger for your needs.

CHARGING OPTIONS FOR PEOPLE WHO CANNOT EASILY CHARGE AT HOME

Home charging is one of the most convenient aspects of EV ownership. However, it simply isn't available for everyone. Here are some ideas to plan out your charging needs.
Condo / Apartment
If you live in a condo or apartment building, ask the superintendent or condo board representative if the building has BEV charging or if they are planning to install it. Sometimes a semi-public charger may be fitted for residents' use.  Other times plans for installations to residents' allocated parking may be available.

Some jurisdictions have "right to charge" legislation that will ensure it lands on the agenda of a condo board. New government funding is enabling charging at more and more condo locations across Canada, so make sure to ask.

Street Parking
Some residents park on the street, and for those who park in front of their homes, it may be possible to run wiring to the car, either overhead or on the footpath, with the appropriate coverage to minimize tripping hazards.  Check with your city on appropriate bylaws.

Another option may be to use an outdoor Level 1 plug typically used for landscaping or maintenance. While the charge will be slow, it may be enough to cover your commuting needs.

Public Charging
For some new owners, this may be the only option - see public charging section.

Workplace Charging
Some workplaces have BEV chargers available. If not, ask your manager, Human Resources or Facilities how this could be installed for employees. Management may be more receptive than you think due to the current trend toward these initiatives.

Parking Apps
Some parking apps may indicate if charging is available, while others may do AirBnB-style home parking and charging.  Check to see if a location is near your home or workplace.
